What Does the Transmission Do?
Your vehicle’s transmission converts the rotational speed from the engine into the road speed needed by the wheels. Regardless of whether you drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission or manual transmission, it is important to have regular maintenance and a routine inspection of your transmission.
Your transmission fluid keeps your transmission cooler and lubricated so that it can continue to move or shift between gear sets. In an automatic transmission, your transmission fluid serves the additional purpose of acting as hydraulic fluid for the system, applying hydraulic pressure to shift the gears automatically. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a regularly scheduled transmission service in the form of a transmission fluid exchange. Your owner’s manual will provide guidance as to how often this service should be done.
Service Options Available at Premier Hyundai of Harvey
When you bring your vehicle in for transmission maintenance at our Service Center, there are a few different options available for you:
- Basic Transmission Package: With this service, we drain the old fluid from your transmission and replace it with new clean fluid.
- Manual Transmission Package: This is like the basic package, but we perform drain and fill services for a manual transmission according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Automatic Transmission Exchange Package: We exchange the old fluid in your transmission and replace it with fresh fluid, adding additives to help extend the life of your transmission and your vehicle overall.
- Fluid and Filter Replacement Package: In this package, we not only drain your old fluid and add new, but we also put in additives, add a new pan, gasket, and filter.
What is the Importance of Transmission Service?
The transmission in your vehicle is powered by the flywheel. The transmission moves between gear sets either increasing or decreasing the torque output going to your wheels. This change between gears is known as shifting. In an automatic transmission, the process of shifting gears occurs automatically without direct input from the driver. In manual transmissions, shifting requires the driver’s direct input by using a clutch pedal whenever you shift to manually move the transmission through gear sets. Other types of transmissions include Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), automated manuals, toroidal and more.
If your transmission is not functioning, you can’t get anywhere. Unfortunately, roadside breakdowns due to a faulty transmission occur more often than you think. If your transmission is not properly maintained, it can lead to much more costly repairs, and in automatics those repairs are far more complicated, involving more components.
